Lawrence Weiner (b. 1942) is one of the most-distinctive American conceptual artists.
His philosophy and aesthetic developed concurrently to Sol LeWitt yet Weiner has focused far more on installation - typically in public spaces and including text.
As a significant portion of his output is temporary, his multiples (which are few and far between) are sought-after and cherished by collectors. This multiple is from the fifth volume of the innovative S.M.S. portfolio.
In 1967 the American artist William Copley created S.M.S. (an abbreviation for "Shit Must Stop"), a subscription-based series of artist multiples. S.M.S. disrupted the traditional model of selling at a traditional gallery. In total there were six volumes in the S.M.S. portfolio including works by Roy Lichtenstein, Yoko Ono, Man Ray, Marcel Duchamp, and Bruce Nauman, among others.
Despite being a relatively young artist, Weiner was selected to participate in this exciting initiative alongside more established artists in the fifth version of S.M.S.
This intimate work is an excellent example of Weiner's conceptual practice, as it combines geometry and text. Weiner considered language to be a sculptural material, and used construction in language to act as his materials.
